Making a Shift from Schooling to Learning

There are different initiatives geared at guiding the Education sector in Uganda. Among many, these are as community level campaigns and mobilization, flexible, child centered and responsive curriculum, actualization and mainstreaming of Universal Primary Education (UPE) policy. The greatest challenge to teacher training and development which should pre-occupy ActionAid Busiki LRP has to do with; inclusivity, internal refresher courses and mainstreaming multi-grade, multi-shift and non-formal education approaches within the RIGHTS framework. Improving participation indicators in ECCD and E, Primary and Vocational training should also be core as a strategy. It is imperative that civil society plays a crucial role as a ‘watchdog’ to monitor these commitments, track expenditure, school management, influence education outcomes and patterns to anchor and guide strategic quality intervention for effectiveness. Putting a cap on runaway GBV: The case of Action Aid and UWONET partnership in Busiki

While I thought I knew Gender Based Violence, prior to working in Uganda I had no basic idea about the negative impact that GBV has to an individual, a family, a community and the society at large. Well, 9 months later I bare seldom condone it neither its perpetrators. I have come to know that rights abuses range from physical and psychological abuses to those of property, resource, allocations and/or ownership at household level. This practice is further exuberated on the basis of lack relevant information and awareness on GBV alleviation by communities and in particular, women and girls. While appreciating the women and girls suffer the most, men also bare the same brut effect of GBV albeit few cases are recorded. I am shocked and surprised that Busoga Sub Region in Eastern Uganda is at the apex of Gender Based Violence violations and that the violations are in one way or another, associated with HIV/AIDS infections. What have we learnt from a 15,000 Euro Youth project support by the International Secretariat?

Since joining Busiki LRP, I have heard the Youth being christened all sorts of names. The one I hear most is, “the youth are the most disoriented and most tasking lot to work with”. Well, the Youth themselves vehemently disagree and usually give truck-loads of reasons for this, in their defense. There’s an adage that says, “ Never judge a book by its cover” . Young people who are jobless, sidelined, have no opportunities, are not integrated into community issues fully and have no foundational skills are a liability and a high risk to a Country. Any Country! Whilst still working on its baby steps in relation to Youth, Busiki LRP received 15,000 Euros to implement a Youth Project that focused on supported Youth to develop skills for economic self-reliance beyond formal employment. Theater for Development: A fresh shift from the never ending awareness & sensitization “trainings”!

It’s an excessively hot and dusty mid Monday morning in Namutumba District – Busiki LRP as we prepare to head off to Ivukula Sub County, one of two others within Namutumba District, in the Eastern side of Uganda. Not much comes to mind during the drive as we head to Rwatama Village not knowing that the adage “Never judge a book by its Cover” is a realization that would soon come to full sight. Community engagements are not tasks for the faint hearted. The results are not immediately realized and getting the communities to open up is an even higher huddle to overcome. As I would soon find out, this is set to change thanks to a shift from typical trainings in the village to congregational laughter, music, dance and subsequently learnings by the young and old alike! Theatre for Development (TFD) is a great vehicle of engagement in demystifying and addressing societal ills.
