Managers and organizations have diverse philosophies about how to motivate employees and manage teams. Some seek to create cooperation and loyalty. Others rely more on the competitive spirit to get things done. And the truth is different approaches can work, but it’s important to understand what kind of work environment you’re creating with your approach. So the question is: Are you more Maslow or Machiavelli. These two paradigms are familiar to many, but they represent extremely different ways of managing people. Putting a cap on runaway GBV: The case of Action Aid and UWONET partnership in Busiki

While I thought I knew Gender Based Violence, prior to working in Uganda I had no basic idea about the negative impact that GBV has to an individual, a family, a community and the society at large. Well, 9 months later I bare seldom condone it neither its perpetrators. I have come to know that rights abuses range from physical and psychological abuses to those of property, resource, allocations and/or ownership at household level. This practice is further exuberated on the basis of lack relevant information and awareness on GBV alleviation by communities and in particular, women and girls. While appreciating the women and girls suffer the most, men also bare the same brut effect of GBV albeit few cases are recorded. I am shocked and surprised that Busoga Sub Region in Eastern Uganda is at the apex of Gender Based Violence violations and that the violations are in one way or another, associated with HIV/AIDS infections. These are some hard times we living in; churches burning, planes falling from the sky, murder, diseases. Schools turned to war zones, even homes are unsafe leaving children abandoned and self-raised. Its time something is done for our young kids, they growing hopeless and that ain’t the way to live. This is just a little something to show them some happiness again, they are going blind. Seeds were planted and they hatched and now there is poverty. In Uganda’s Busoga Region - Eastern Uganda there is no poverty. This ain’t poverty. It’s much more. For the affluent, poverty is defined by amount of money one has, access to health care and maybe, proper housing. Well, today the affluent will understand poverty since it’s not understood. Youth overcomes denial to become a HIV/AIDS advocate

Thirty year-old Roseline Tshuma is a resident of ward five in Epworth District - situated South-East of Harare, approximately 18kms away. She is a single parent to a seven year-old daughter who attends grade one at Kubatana Primary school. Roseline is 1.6 meters tall, dark complexioned and maintains natural short hair and vends vegetables for a living. Behind all these lie a radiant smile, an infectious laugh and big black eyes that welcome one to her rather feather-soft persona. Roseline is a direct beneficiary of capacity building programs by Youth Agenda Trust (YAT). YAT is a partner to ActionAid International Zimbabwe (AAIZ).
