Since joining Busiki LRP, I have heard the Youth being christened all sorts of names. The one I hear most is, “the youth are the most disoriented and most tasking lot to work with”. Well, the Youth themselves vehemently disagree and usually give truck-loads of reasons for this, in their defense. There’s an adage that says, “ Never judge a book by its cover” . Young people who are jobless, sidelined, have no opportunities, are not integrated into community issues fully and have no foundational skills are a liability and a high risk to a Country. Any Country! Whilst still working on its baby steps in relation to Youth, Busiki LRP received 15,000 Euros to implement a Youth Project that focused on supported Youth to develop skills for economic self-reliance beyond formal employment. Theater for Development: A fresh shift from the never ending awareness & sensitization “trainings”!

It’s an excessively hot and dusty mid Monday morning in Namutumba District – Busiki LRP as we prepare to head off to Ivukula Sub County, one of two others within Namutumba District, in the Eastern side of Uganda. Not much comes to mind during the drive as we head to Rwatama Village not knowing that the adage “Never judge a book by its Cover” is a realization that would soon come to full sight. Community engagements are not tasks for the faint hearted. The results are not immediately realized and getting the communities to open up is an even higher huddle to overcome. As I would soon find out, this is set to change thanks to a shift from typical trainings in the village to congregational laughter, music, dance and subsequently learnings by the young and old alike! Theatre for Development (TFD) is a great vehicle of engagement in demystifying and addressing societal ills. Something is happening Busiki. Something is happening in our world!

Something is happening. Something is happening in Busiki! It’s always good to have your closest friend say something about you. The Youth of Namutumba are the closest friends whom I have here in Uganda. I was delighted to see each and every one of them at Ivukula Sub County Dialogue and Reporting Meeting in spite of a storm warning. This revealed that they are determined to grow and go anyhow, anyway.  Something is happening with the Youth, something is happening in Busiki! I am just happy that I work with Action Aid in this region supporting the Youth since I know somehow that only when it is dark enough can you see the star and I see the star in the Youth as they rise up. Individually the Youth are poor and desperate; collectively they are richer and calculated. So, I want to ask you a question. What are your fears? What are you scared of? Because we all have fears. We all have something that’s blocking us, that’s holding us back. You can either live your dreams or live your fears and I think the majority of us actually, are living our fears. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life and don’t be trapped by living with the results of other peoples thinking and most importantly have the courage to follow your heart and intuition because they somehow already know what you truly want to become – all else is secondary. Majority of the fears that we have are not life or death fears, they are not those kind of fears. But through our imagination, we blow them out of proportion and give them more power than they actually have or deserve and permit them to govern our lives as regards how far we can stretch out on our dreams and discovering our stuff. A lot has changed since you have been gone, I did a lot of good and I also did a lot of wrong. I made a whole lot of change and I got changed a lot by the people I worked for and the places I worked in. Sometimes I feel weak; most times I stood up strong. Ever since you went away, it's been hard for me .
