In Uganda, Youth - the Community - has for a longtime been synonymous with poverty, exploitation, displacement, corruption, early pregnancies, lack of basic skills for development and exclusion in national and local government planning, in-effective youth adult partnerships, non-participation of youth are some of the key bottlenecks facing Uganda’s Youth! Theater for Development: A fresh shift from the never ending awareness & sensitization “trainings”!

It’s an excessively hot and dusty mid Monday morning in Namutumba District – Busiki LRP as we prepare to head off to Ivukula Sub County, one of two others within Namutumba District, in the Eastern side of Uganda. Not much comes to mind during the drive as we head to Rwatama Village not knowing that the adage “Never judge a book by its Cover” is a realization that would soon come to full sight. Community engagements are not tasks for the faint hearted. The results are not immediately realized and getting the communities to open up is an even higher huddle to overcome. As I would soon find out, this is set to change thanks to a shift from typical trainings in the village to congregational laughter, music, dance and subsequently learnings by the young and old alike! A strategic plan also known as a Road Map in reality is a living document which directs the overall functioning of any Organization.    Strategic planning is important, but at the same time can be a complex issue especially for new and small organizations. Looking at the NGO sector, one may find that many NGOs do not have well drafted strategic plans and the few NGOs that have the plans are written in a very complex way – not  comprehensible  by the communities they serve. These are either too lengthy or too complicated to implement and are therefore not put into use. What better way to describe the importance of planning in our day to day lives. Making a Shift from Schooling to Learning

There are different initiatives geared at guiding the Education sector in Uganda. Among many, these are as community level campaigns and mobilization, flexible, child centered and responsive curriculum, actualization and mainstreaming of Universal Primary Education (UPE) policy. The greatest challenge to teacher training and development which should pre-occupy ActionAid Busiki LRP has to do with; inclusivity, internal refresher courses and mainstreaming multi-grade, multi-shift and non-formal education approaches within the RIGHTS framework. Improving participation indicators in ECCD and E, Primary and Vocational training should also be core as a strategy.
